Smoke and music filled the air at BCDC Park in Beckemeyer this past Saturday at the 6th annual Jim Knapp Memorial Little Pig Cookoff. This annual celebration of small-town living kicked off at noon with a flag raising by the Beckemeyer Legion Honor Guard and the national anthem performed by the District 12 Band. The Marching Bobcats then entertained the crowd with a few more musical selections after the conclusion of the opening ceremony.
Folks then took a look at the cardboard boats on display for the Snapper Lake Regatta. Best of Show was awarded to “Hog Hunters” comprised of Preston Baker, Andrew Jansen, Cole Bruggemann, & Tanner Pate – who then went on to win first place in the team competition as well. Luke and Grace Etheridge finished second in the team race. Caden Pate and Jake Albers came in third. The coveted “Anchor Award” went to Johnathan Jergensmeyer and Freddy Ritchey. First place in the solo race went to Ethan Fields, with Quinton Jones placing second.
Cupcake Wars were back this year resulting in a new champion: 1st place – “Camp Cupcake” with a s’more cupcake – Laura & Chad Dulle, Melinda Quintanilla and Ron & Roseann Blumenstein; 2nd place – “Little Pig Cupcake” with a maple spice cupcake – Naomi Knapp & Rebecca Schmitt; 3rd place – “Big Bad Wolves” with a beer and bacon cupcake – Desiree & Avery Sandifer.
The “Hogs and Hotrods” car show was on display next to the “Little Pig Market” vendor fair. Thunder and Lightning Cloggers performed for the crowd, with a special guest appearance from Elvis himself! Local Fire Departments waged their Water Wars on Murray Street, with Carlyle FD taking first place & Bartelso FD claiming second. Randy Pulver of Beckemeyer came out on top in the Bags Tournament.
Forty three (43) teams competed in the Porksteak Cookoff. The team “Master Basters,” with team lead Paul Rinella, took first place in the blind judging, and earned a spot on the “Wall of Flame.” “Extreme Meat Smokers (E.M.S.)” with team lead Allen Pollman, came in second place. After a coinflip tiebreaker for third place, “Boom Boom BBQ” with team lead Jamie Baker, took home the third place ribbon – just edging out last year’s champs, “00 BBQ”.
Best Site Awards:1st place “Boom Boom BBQ” with the Baker clan from Beckemeyer; 2nd place: “Sin City BBQ” comprised of Abby Calloway & Kyle Knapp; 3rd place: Lisa Page with “Snapper Delites”
People’s Choice Awards: 1st place “Big Belly Boys” (Bruce Archer & co); 2nd place “Ace Waynes” (Scott Diekemper & Markus Kearns); 3rd place “Gonzo BBQ” (Scott & Jason Gonzales).
Festival-goers enjoyed 10-hours of live music with performances from: Doc Reitz, The Legendary Knapp Brothers, L8r Dayz, The Good For Nothin Band, The Nudge, Feedback, & Double Shot.
The historic Egg Toss competition, sponsored by Gertmantown Egg Company, resulted in returning Grand champions Jay & Karly Wessel taking home the crown. In a heated battle, Josh Knapp & Darcy Elizabeth took second, while Debbie Knapp & Riley Koehler nabbed third place.
With this being a volunteer-powered festival, there are more folks to thank than can be counted….a special thanks to Jeremy Pate for coordinating the festival this year.
Monies raised go directly to the Beckemeyer Community Development Club for park maintenance and upgrades.
Good folks gathered in Beckemeyer Saturday, August 22 to celebrate the 5th Annual Jim Knapp Memorial Little Pig Cookoff at BCDC Park.
Festivities kicked off at 3 PM with a flag raising ceremony performed by Beckemeyer Legion Honor Guard. The Marching Bobcats performed our National Anthem. Jim Knapp, Jr. of Greenville, IL, then gave a reflection on his father and the contributions from so many good people who helped to shape (and continue to shape) BCDC Park. There was a moment of silence for Kenneth Knapp, who unexpectedly passed away earlier in the week. The Knapp family did a balloon release in Kenny’s memory.
Music once again filled the air with live performances by the Jim Miller Band, Davis Brothers Band, a small special set from The Legendary Knapp Brothers, Riverside Tavern Revival, Feedback, and Wrath of Khan.
Bryan Duncan of Breese came out on top in the Bags Tournament. Cory Melton of Beckemeyer took second place, and Randy Pulver of Beckemeyer won third prize.
Placing first in the Egg Toss competition as the newly crowned Grand Champions were father-daughter team: Jay & Karly Wessel, of Beardstown, IL. The father-son team of Mark & Malone Brown of Troy, IL, caught second place and Brooke Deiters & Quentin Jones of Carlyle, IL, placed 3rd.
As a new feature this year the Vendor Fair featured over 25 local entrepreneurs displaying their wares.
The Cardboard Boat Regatta featured a field of 11 boats. Taking first place in the Best of Show category was Russell Prater and his boat, “The Aquatic Swine”. Taking the trophy for first place in the Team Competition were Tanner Pate, Caden Pate, Preston Baker, and Cole Bruggemann manning their “Fire Rescue” boat. Paddling in at first place in the solo race was Jonathon Jurgensmeyer. Taking home the “Anchor” award for their spectacular sinking were Grace McIntyre & Rachel Loepker. All winners from this event are of Beckemeyer, IL.
Six (6) teams squared off in the Cupcake Wars. First place was awarded to “Amazin Glazin”, which was Stephanie Deiters of Carlyle, for her apple pie cupcakes. Second place went to “Dessert Deserts”, which was Naomi Knapp of Breese, for her cinnamon roll cupcakes. Coming in at third place was “I Bake 2″ – Brittany Smith of New Baden, with her peanut butter cup cupcakes.
Free childrens’ activities of face painting, train rides, sandcastle building, and chalk art kept the kids smiling. Rainbow Ranch Petting Zoo was on site providing some very fun memories.
While battling early afternoon storms, thirty-nine (39) teams competed in the Porksteak Cookoff. Joe Million & Nic Hendriex of “The Double Oughts”, from Gillespie, IL, scored 1st place in the Blind Judging category. This team has competed in the cookoff every year & have placed each time – with this being their first ribbon award. Placing first in Best Site was “Holy Smokes”, making this category a four-peat for winners Kyle Knapp of Rockwell, NC, and Abby Calloway of Beckemeyer. 1st place in People’s Choice Best Porksteak category was “Ace Wayne’s BBQ” (Markus Kearns and Scott Diekemper of Carlyle) – named in memory of Scott’s father, the late Wayne “Ace” Diekemper.

Good folks gathered in Beckemeyer on Jim Knapp’s 84th birthday to celebrate at the 4th Annual Little Pig Cookoff at BCDC Park.
Festivities kicked off at Noon with a flag raising ceremony performed by Beckemeyer Legion Honor Guard. Bud Summers played the national anthem on solo guitar. Ron Knapp then gave an invocation welcoming all festival goers with an account of how Beckemeyer residents (past and present) work with vision to create and continue to develop such a beautiful park.
Music once again filled the air from noon till 1:00am with live performances by Bud Summers, Knoisemaker and the Silent Partners, Clusterpluck, Good For Nothin Band, Later Days, Randy Charles and the Western Angels, Davis Brothers Band, Overdrive, Feedback, and The Empty Folds.
Randy Pulver came out on top in the Bags Tournament. Zach Deieters took second place, and Cory Melton won third prize. Placing first in the egg toss competition as the newly crowned Grand Champions were Corey Hempen and Jordan Kleiboeker. Payton Plummer & Katelyn Wessel caught second place and Lenny Lammers & Ron Holthaus placed 3rd.
Free children’s activities of face painting, train rides, sandcastle building, and chalk art kept the kids smiling. Majestic Memories photo booth was on site providing some very fun pictures. Many folks tried their hand at picnic poker during the evening hours.
51 teams competed in the porksteak cookoff. “Miss Pee-G’s Smokers” repeated as 1st place winners in the blind judging. This team consisting of husband-wife Gary and Penny Sprehe will again have their name engraved on the “Wall of Flame” which is kept on display year-round at BCDC Park. Placing first in People’s Choice Best Site was “KISS the Cook”, making this category a three-peat for winners Kyle Knapp and Abby Calloway. 1st place in People’s Choice Best Porksteak category was “Boom Boom BBQ” headed by team captain Nick Baker.

The 3rd Annual Jim Knapp Memorial Little Pig Cookoff was celebrated on August 24th, 2013 at BCDC Park in Beckemeyer, Illinois. This volunteer-powered festival benefited the Beckemeyer Community Development Club (BCDC).
Festivities kicked off at noon with a flag-raising by the Beckemeyer Legion Honor Guard. Opening ceremonies lead directly into over 12 hours of live music! Featured performers included: Warren Evans, Almost Nameless, Brew Crew, Family Obsession, Randy Charles and the Western Angels, The Two Muches, Weiner and the Numbnuts, Something To Mow, Overdrive, and Feedback.
51teams competed in a backyard-style Porksteak Cookoff. “Miss P-Gees Smoker” was awarded first place in the blind judging. “Doc’s Dudes” won 2nd, and “Fat Boys BBQ” took the third place ribbon. “Rub Me Tender” won the award for people’s choice best porksteak. “Bedrock BBQ” went home with the ribbon for best site.
The two-man team of Chris Captain and “Soup” Miller won the wiffleball tournament. Washer tourney winners: 1st place: Reis Walker, 2nd place: Nate Berdard, 3rd place: Curt Timmermann, 4th place: Rita Duncan. Kids area was bustling all day with free facepainting, train rides, chalk art, and sandcastle building. To help shuffle things up, a Picnic Poker stand made it’s debut at the LPC.
The second annual Jim Knapp Memorial Little Pig Cookoff was held on August 25, 2012 at in Beckemeyer. Festivities began with a flag raising ceremony by the Beckemeyer Legion Honor Guard with the national anthem sung by Brad Niemeyer.
Forty teams of contestants vied for the title of “Best Porksteak”. Eric Hostmeyer, Jim Muskopf, & Ellie Hostmeyer made up “Team Meathead,” which placed first. Along with the first place ribbon and prize money, their name will be engraved on the LPC Wall of Flame plaque. “Scrapyard BBQ”, the team of Lyle Lammers, placed second. “R&L BBQ”, consisting of brothers Lenny & Lonnie Lammers, took third place.
Brian & Stan Wolfe on “Team Wolfe Bar-B-Que” earned the title Best Porksteak by People’s Choice vote. In a new category this year, the People’s Choice Best Site was awarded to “The Sioux Chef & The Loin Ranger” team, consisting of Kyle Knapp and Abby Calloway.
A random-draw washer tournament paired contestants with a different partner each match. Coming out on top was Dylan Koetting in first place, Spencer Koetting finished in second place, and third place was a tie between Reece Duncan & Brian Duncan.
The Wiffleball Tournament endured the gusting winds and blew in the winning two-person team of Josh Mueller & Lathian Walthes.
We were visited by two Pot-bellied pigs, which were then raffled off in a silent auction. They went home with the winning bidder, Ray Ainslie.
There was a grill raffled off along with several smaller cookoff packages. The raffle winners were 1st Prize, Terry Stock; second prize, Jules; third prize, Tim Droege fourth prize, Kathy O’Shea.
Ten bands provided live entertainment throughout the entire festival. Performances by: Ron Knapp, Wildflower Conspiracy, Mostly Harmless, Randy Charles and the Western Angels, The Good For Nothin Band, L8R Dayz, Fuzzhead Geezer and Meat, Feedback, Breakfast For Dinner, and Brew Crew.
Proceeds benefit the Beckemeyer Community Development Club (BCDC) and will be used for park maintenance and improvements. The BCDC extends sincere thanks to the many good folks of Beckemeyer and surrounding communities who came together to make this an outstanding event!
2011 Little Pig Cookoff
The Jim Knapp Memorial Little Pig Cookoff was held August 20, 2011 at BCDC Park in Beckemeyer, IL
The Beckemeyer Legion Honor Guard kicked off the event with a flag raising ceremony. Jeff Pinkel’s tenor saxophone played the national anthem. Mayor Mike Stock gave an address, followed by a speech from Ron Knapp.
A wiffleball tournament was quickly underway, hosting 8 teams on three fields. The kids area was open & busy with free activities for kids fo all ages – including sandcastle building, obstacle courses, facepainting, and chalk art.
There were 33 teams competing in the Porksteak Cookoff. The judges awarded first prize to “Team Wolfe Bar-B-Que”. Brian Wolfe accepted the prize money of $250, and promptly donated it to the BCDC.
Live music filled the air throughout the entire festival. There was at least one Knapp in every band. Entertainment was provided by: Wreckless Intent; Knoisemaker & the Silent Partners; The Good For Nothin Band; The Snauzeberries; FEEDBACK; Brew Crew; and Fuzzhead, Geezer and Meat.
Other activities included a grill raffle, 50/50 tickets, a euchre-style-draw washer tournament, frisbee target contest, egg toss games, and kiddie train rides.
All proceeds benefited the Beckemeyer Community Development Club for park maintenence & improvements.
